There are two terms you need to know so we may talk the printing lingo. Guides, Final Trim Area and Live Area. Let's take a look below so that you can get a good understanding of how files should be prepared.

Guides: Guides give you a visual reference point of our cut zone. It is important to first make your canvas size and then bring in your guides 1/8th of an inch in on all sides. Any text outside of these guides will fall into the trim area and be cut off. Most design programs, such as Photoshop have guides and will not show up in the final print.
Live Area: This refers to the final size of the printed item. So a business card is 3.6" x 2.1" final trim area. Or, a 1/2 page is 5.5" x 8.5" final trim area.
Trim Area: This refers to the area where type should be inside the final trim area. We ask that the live area be 1/8" to a 1/4" from the final trim area. Example: if a 1/2 page has a final trim area of 8.5" x 5.5", the live area should be 8.25" x 5.25". This ensures a good balance with the printed product and prevents the possibility of cutting type when trimmed down.
